I know quite a few guys on here like muzzle brakes... here is a video that illustrates why you need a 'balanced' brake.
Notice that barrel flexing is exacerbated with thinner barrel profiles.

For those who are going to build a custom stock, you can reduce muzzle rise by working the line of the bore as close to the center of the recoil pad as you can get. It will cause a straight line recoil into you shoulder.
