Richards Microfit Stocks

Postby AssassinBean » Sun Mar 10, 2013 12:32 pm

I'm getting ready to order a stock for my project gun and was thinking about ordering a Tac-Driver Sihouette from Richards. I really like the looks of it and it seems like it would feel great. Anyone have any experience with this stock? I've seen some Richards "horror stories" on other forums, but it usually boils down to taking a long time and not being able to get a hold of them. As long as I receive it and it works, I'm not too worried about the rest. Anyone have some first-hand experience with this company?

They leave much up to a customer, so you'll have to do your part (final shape; sanding; inletting adjustments; oil treatment...) . if you work with wood then you'll be just fine.
All those "nightmarish" stories are created by folks who use "plug & play" stuff only & anything outside of that realm makes'em extremely uncomfortable & nervous...

Maybe I am one of these guys, but I bought a standard Richards walnut stock and regret it. I was the second owner, but the first guy never took it out of the bag. Its a very nice looking piece of wood, and I like to think I know what to look for there. I know these were partially finished (advertised as 98%), but I have 20-25 hours in sanding and inletting with more to go before I finish it. The thing that has really hung me up was the inletting is canted. I feel this is beyond the average joe, I finally gave up on my own skills (which are fairly limited with wood) and sent it to 0933.
Long story short, I was ready throw this one in a fireplace and buy a Boyds. If I had to do it again, I'd buy a Boyds.

Wow. Sorry to hear it especially knowing that the products is not cheap... I guess that the factor of luck is present here & of course the quality of Richards stocks are no match to superior quality of Boyd's stocks.

I have one for a mosin, and while the laminate pattern I got was unique, it appears to be inletted by a drunken beaver. The forend is not close to symmetrical.

You can get stuff from them with options you just can't find anywhere else, but understand you need to do a bunch of work from there.
