New mosin project. Now what to do with it.

Postby ShootnMathews » Sat Jul 30, 2016 6:36 am

I've been looking for a project mosin for a long time but haven't wanted to pay these premium prices. I have been working on a friends guns for him. Setting them up for long range shooting and teaching him how to. He has shot my built mosin and is very impressed with it. Well at the range yesterday as a thank you he presented me with a mosin that he bought. I told him that I couldn't accept it but he wouldn't take no for an answer. The gun itself it not in great shape. It's the original war time stock. Not a refurb. No brass trim. Black steel cleaning rod instead of stainless. Someone has spray painted ALL of the metal pieces black. The paint is peeling and nasty. I don't see 2 numbers anywhere on the gun that are factory matched. Everything is arsenal refurb electopencil matched. BUT, it has a beautiful bore and crown.

I am very torn on what to do with this gun. On one hand I'd like to have an original "classic" shooter for the stock rifle matches. I think this one would make a good one with some accurizing. I used my hand loads for my build mosin to hit the 300 yard gong with this rifle in 3 shots and the first two were just walking up to it since I had never fired the gun before. I have a nice clean stock from another build trimmed in brass. I may just strip all the paint and blue the rifle. Refinish the stock and make a beautiful match gun.

I also may put it in a Boyd's ProVarmint with a rock solid mount and scope.

I'm so torn!

Jared

I'm sure you remember what our elders told us , while growing up .
"If it ain't broke , stop fixin it".

Sounds like you've got a barreled action that's worth keeping stock and a good candidate for re-furb to a good stock rifle . We all see M-N's that have been virtually "shot-out", and finding those few left that are good , tight barrels are getting harder to come by , without paying high dollar .

My vote is to make her a "Original", and use her as a Match gun , and have fun with it . And if and when you do shoot the barrel out , you'll have a good candidate for a Mod.
If not me.....Who ?
If not now ....When ?

I'm with Grindl....that bore looks terrific and a nice candidate to put a good original stock on.

Forgot to mention this option. I was also considering getting an accumounts PU setup for it. But I'm still very undecided. I'm really leaning towards just refinishing it all to be a really nice classic shooter. Th numbers are all mismatched so I'm not worried about losing value on it. I think I'm going to remove the black paint. Clean up the metal some to remove any unsightly imperfections and Reblue the steel. Then sand and stain the stock something pretty and oil it up nice. Probably polish the bolt and brass end caps up nice and shiny. Yes I know this will all ruin the value but there is no value to it in my eyes. Every piece is electro penciled. The beautiful bore is the only positive note on the gun. So I'd rather just have a really "pretty" rifle.

Hey Jared:
If you need a stock let me know, I've been keeping this quite but I've got another project rifle in the works and I have a stock that's in decent shape. I think I've even got all the hardware.

So send me a PM and let me know. I also have something else to chat with you about.

Gave it a quick test run. 10 shots to sight it at 25 yards. It was 6" to the right at first then shot 5 at 50 yards off hand. It was still a few inches right so the second 5 rounds I aimed at the left side of his face. This was silver tip surplus.

One of the reproduction scopes would be on my list. Looks like a good barrel.

Took this gun to the range with me yesterday. I had no trouble ringing steel nearly every shot at 325 yards with silver tip surplus and open sights.
