Bolt Bushing.

Postby Grimstod » Sun Oct 08, 2017 4:06 am

So I got pretty tired of all the cratered primers I was getting in Smyert 2 and three so I decided to give bolt busing a try. Its actually very easy. I have now done two of my mosins. Soon I will do more of them.
I have done a bunch of them now for other people to. A lot of Savage guys have been having me do theirs.

This is before. The Firing pin hole was gigantic. The pin in the bolt face is .100!

Centering up the bolt head in the chuck. This is a lot of trial and error. Fortunately am only touching those parts of the bolt face that only support the primer. If I was reheadspacing the rifle I would just true up the lugs and face but as you all know chaining headspacing on a mosin is not easy. lol Still I like to get it as close as possible because I am OCD.

Here is the bolt face reamed out for the bushing.

Finished product has a much smaller firing pin hole. Almost 50% smaller. You can see the results on the primers. Brass primer is before and nickel plated primer is after.

Nice job, what are you using to bond the bushing into the bolt face?
Thanks
Mark

BTW a 4 jaw independent chuck might make it easier to center since you can adjust it a little better than a 3 jaw. That's my next purchase for my lathe.

The bushing is oversized by .002. One time I accidentally made on .001 oversized and I had the hardest time getting it back out. At .002 its never coming out. Also there is a step inside the bolt that I leave so its supported agains blush thrust from the primer during ignition. Did one for a friend and he has put 1300 rounds on it and it has not moved so much as a .0001th.

Yes I do have a four jaw. I would use it if it was way out of round.
