1200y+ Mosin Smyert Mk 3.7

Postby Grimstod » Sat Feb 23, 2013 3:02 pm

Ok so this is my second project gun. It is really the gun that I first wanted to build however since it has taken so long to get the lother walther barrel it will probably be finished second.

Below is the receiver that I am working with. Its very ruff and rusty. The russians must have been working in there sleep to put it together so sloppily. The boar is trash, no problem she is getting a new barrel anyway.
The bolt channel is however very nice and smooth. Almost no wobble which is unusual and very desirable to me.

If I ever get a stock from bluegrass it will be a tactical one similar to Mozilla #3
Lother walther has charged my card so now I know its eather on its way or in production. :!: yay

Originally I was going to use the scope that I got for Project #1 however I do not think it is the best choice for shooting at a thousand yards since it can only compensate for 7moa before you turn the dial one revolution.
I will have to start shopping again.
timney trigger I ordered from midway usa and got a good deal thanks to a tip from Merader on a sale that they were having. It is backordered so who know when it will get here.
I have a set of bedding pillars and am going to order a round receiver scope mount from RSI tonight.
Bolt, bedding pillars, and bedding compound are already here. Plus I have already gained some experience blueing. this gun will def have to be entirely reblued.

I had some time to take some better photos today. The one with the red and dark stock is for project #1 and the lighter one is Project #2

There is even rust on the sights both front and back

rust on the receiver and in it too. the machining is terrible. Will take a lot of polishing to get rid of it all.
Image
Not sure what to do about this. Now if only my blugrass stock would get finished

Great start! As usual I have to ask what your barrel/bore option will be.

Someday I will have shot out one of my units and will get one, I am just waiting to find out who can do them right.

Of course, I will be looking at a fat barrel like Shep's units, in .308 (1 in 10) to shoot heavy Berger VLD's.

I like the way you arrange things on your pictures. I usually use empty wall... Not very creative on a background. :)

Hi Grim --- next time you come down bring that receiver and I'll buff it out. I've used my little belt sander to refinish one of mine and wow -- I hope it looks that good blued.

Ok I have been shopping for a scope. I like barska scopes. Should I go with a 4-16 power 6-24 or 10-40?

I posted my $0.02 over here...

viewtopic.php?f=78&t=3005&p=11848#p11848

I would really recommend staying away from Barska stuff... while better than NCStar, and about on par with BSA, you can do ALOT better for a long range scope.

Thanks 0933 there is a lot of info there. I would prefer FFP reticle.

Here is one I like the looks of. I am eyeballing the big 60mm lens because I want to do some long distance shooting in low light. Its 600$ so I may have to save for a little while.
http://swfa.com/Falcon-Menace-10-50x60- ... 47585.aspx
Thing is there is so little info on it. cant find any reviews anywhere. Does Falcon have good optics. As a photographer I am pretty critical about sharp optics. Even my brothers leopold disappoints. lol

MrD I do like Barska scopes too. I have their 6-24 60mm sniper scope. Its going onto my project #1 rifle. http://www.socamo.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=2309
My only complaint with it is that at 24x the image is a little soft.
Maybe I will get the Barska that I have pictured above for now and get something nicer when I can afford it.

Grimstod,
If you're brothers Leupold disapoints... then probably only Nightforce, S&B, or USO would please... and thoses are $2,000 + scopes!!

Falcons generally have fairly good optics. On par with the SWFA SS scopes. Vortex will be a little better, and the Bushnell ones noticeably worse.

I wouldn't go with that model though... It's geared toward benchrest shooters, has 1/8 MOA adjustments, and only 30 MOA total adjustment.

FFP reticle scopes will be more expensive. If you get a fixed power, it wouldn't matter. Something to keep in mind.

If you can, I'd try and find a place that has a few different scopes in stock, and look through them. From your pictures, I assume you're a pretty competent photographer... So you'll probably have more definite requirements related to optical quality.

Good luck!
