finnish m28/76 mosin nagant

Postby farmerboy78 » Wed Mar 06, 2013 9:06 am

hey guys, new here but i have 2 newly aquired 28/76 barreled actions that i am building into complete rifles. one is the marksman rifle with a .308 bore and the other is a sniper trainer with a d-166 .310 bore. keeping the finnish match triggers and cleaned and polished the bolts and bolt channels in the actions. also installed 2 new m39 front sight blades from finland.

marksman: on the marksman so far i installed a hex rock solid mount topped off with a new redfield tactical bdc 3-9x40, new rock solid action screws, and have a stock coming from blue grass gun stocks ( full tactical package in black ). have lapua brass and will reload with berger 175 gr vld using rcbs dies.

exsniper: on the exsniper so far i installed a MFI all steel rail in the original scope base, rock solid action screws and pillars, and have a laminated stock coming from big gorilla gunstocks ( tactical/ f class appearance ). will be reloading with sieraa .311 bullets, but for now i have surplus russian match 182 gr ammo from AIM.

anyone have a suggestions on how to finnish these rifles out beyond that?

Good job! I am looking forward to hearing of your results. I have been shooting my M28/76 action for a couple of months now. Let me share a couple of osbervations, maybe you can confirm or deny what I am finding.

1.) SLUG the D-166. That is a chamber spec, not a bore spec. My D-166 slugged @ .3082 Groove diameter. The bore diameter looks to be @.300, but grooves are harder to measure on the slug.

2.) .308 bullets do not touch the lands in my D-166 barrel at OAL.
They DO in my M28-30. Both are supposed to have a .3082 groove, but the bores do not start the same.

3.) The D166 Lapua 200gr WILL hit at OAL, because it is the fatter bullet. The Berger VLD's (215/190gr) are @ 3.25 before I get meat on the bullet, then there is very little to crimp.

Sierra's work well even when seated off the lands, still the most solid bullet choice for overall use. 200gr if you can get them!

Just thought I would let you know before you spent a lot on exotic .308 bullets. Do not waste your time with the TSX bullets, they keyhole unless they are seated perfectly. Out of 25 or so that I shot, only 1 group of 5 seated in between the 2 top cannelure's would not.
I have read threads on other calibers doing the same thing.

Let me know how it goes!

Oh, here is the tool Shep showed me how to make (empty cartridge) to test the seating:
IMG00339-20130306-1031.jpg

Place the bullet in slightly and chamber, then withdraw carefully and measure.

The neck is cut in 4 places 90 degrees apart, perhaps not as deep as I did, so that the bullet can be easily removed. You may need to lube the bullet ogive a bit so it does not stick in the bore.
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Nice looking family. I'm looking forward to your range reports. As far your build list go -- Your pretty close. M1 or Devil Dog might be able to give you some suggestions on an adjustable butt pad and cheek riser system. They both have experience with them.

OK so the enquiring mind wants to know.. How do you tell the difference? Is there a D mark on the barrel or something? Weren't both setup originally for diopter sites? I understand the sniper has a scope mount on it but did your come with the scope mount or is that an after market?
Thanks
Mark

Thanks Shep, which Bluegrass stock did you order? The tactical comes with an adjustable cheek system. I really love the one I have. As far as adjusting the LOP the tactical comes with a spacer that holds the recoil pad. IF you need it longer you could make a additional spacer and add it into the existing one, shorter is a different story.

BTW Morgan's Mom passed away last week so your order might be slightly delayed while the family deals with their loss.

Well neither of mine had the diopter sights on them, but yes the exsniper has d-166 stamped on the side of the barrel.
