I switched the 28/76 stock to the exsniper and put the big gorilla stock on the exmarksman... Did a little shooting today to work up a load for the marksman... Ended up with a smk 175 .308 over 44 gr imr 4350, lapua brass, and Winchester primers... 4 out of 5 tore a jagged hole and the fifth I pulled a bit and it had about an 1/8" gap from the jagged hole @ 100 yds... That is the load I will use. Shot two groups with the sniper using 43 and 43.5 gr under lapua d166... 43 gr group was about 11/2" and the 43.5 was about .75, will do more load work for the sniper...

Well did some more reloading this morning to workup a d166 load for my exsniper... Started at 43 gr imr 4350 to make sure it wasn't me... 43 was 11/2", 43.5 was 1", 44 was right at .58... That works for me!!!

Talked to Ken at rock solid this evening about mounts and load data... He told me I was nowhere near the max load using imr4350... He told me it is shown to be 55 gr as a max and that 54 was his accuracy load... Again started load development at 52.5 to 54, was very very hard to see a difference between 53.5 and 54 @ 100 at least... Will load up more of each and try at 200 and go with the best then. But man oh man my shoulder definitely felt the difference, 54 made me bruise

Ever used Varget?
43.5 is the magic number for my Mosin (.311, 174 SMK) as well as my son's Savage .308 with the 175 SMK. I've loaded quite a bit hotter, but accuracy suffers.
Worth trying if you have any around. Varget is a "go to" for the .308, and the 54R is very similar in case capacity and bullet weight.

Varget is what I shoot in mine. 43.5 grns was the magic number before I cut the barrel. Now it 42.5. Unfortunately with cutting the barrel and reducing powder I lost a lot of speed

I've had great luck with 174gr SMK over 44.3gr Varget, oal 3.003" in my Izzy M91/30. Sub-moa at 100yds using a cheap 30x pistol scope. Not quite what devildog gets with his fancy shmancy Finnstigator, but smiles for me nonetheless...

Well Ken, tells me that a 175 gr smk over 54 gr imr4350 is clocking at 2820 through a chrony with a m39 unmodded barrel. So for the 2 28/76 I am going to stick with that... But I too have a savage pc .308 and I load 175 gr vld over 45 gr of varget and its a one holer at 100... I am planning on using varget for my 42 sako mod build when its done... I'm getting 2790 out of my savage and a 20" barrel hope the sako will be similar...

I know this is an old one, but I wanted to give my 1894 28/76 a little bit of an update. I took her out today and shot an f class open shoot @ 600yds. This old girl didn't do bad at all! I shot an overall 511 of 600, but that was because of my inability to really call the wind. It was definitely alot of fun and the guys at the range couldn't believe that an antique mosin would shoot like it did.

That sounds like fun. Always a good feeling to do well with a firearm that many feel isnt worth the trouble.
