Mosin rescue build

Postby holescreek » Wed Dec 02, 2015 6:08 pm

I'm new to the forum, I was referred here by a member on the M14 forum. I get mostly negative reactions from this build from the collector types so I figured I'd post the rifle I've been working on and off on for the last few months for your review. Without getting too wordy I was given a barreled action that needed a lot of love. I tried to save the barrel but it was too shot out so now the only thing left original is the mag well/trigger guard. All the receiver parts were made from aluminum in my home hobby shop. The brake is my copy of the Romanian PSL and is stainless steel.

Modifications include:

-Bolt handle moved back on the bolt body
-Receiver notched for bolt handle relocation
-Bridge built for rear pic rail support
-Machined pic rail, bolts onto receiver in front and back
-Timney trigger
-Aluminum receiver
-Aluminum stock
-AR handguard
-22" McGowen barrel blank turned and fluted
-An assortment of brakes
-Millett TRS-1 scope on Burris Xtreme rings

I'm still breaking the barrel in, only 48 shots through it so far but it looks promising. With decent bullets I've had groups from .8" up to 1.25". I won't get serious about accuracy until it's had a couple hundred bullets through the tube.

(Edited to remove photobucket links)

Hopefully I'm posting this in the right place, this rifle tends to rile up M-N collectors. Rest assured, the parts weren't good for restoration.

I don't have any video (yet) of this rifle in it's current configuration but there are a couple of slow0motion videos of the rifle with it's original barrel. As mentioned, the original barrle was in pretty bad shape but I still wanted to see how it grouped before I made the new barrel. The barrel measured .3145" for the first few inches from the chamber and got worse from there. It was able to group fairly well with silvertip, around 3.5" IIRC. PPU Match however was about 17" groups due to the bullet diameter being .310"

Here's one of the early videos:

It's always fun to watch the shots from the high speed camera, the barrel whip is really evident.

Very nice machine work. This is a welcome sight to see work that goes to the extreme.

This is very nice and well done. Any targets worth showing yet?

No targets worth posting, still working on break-in. I won't start counting groups until they're consistent. I started making a rear monopod over the holiday weekend, just got the aluminum hard anodized and painted and the steel parts parkerized. I'll get some pics of it mounted as soon as the paint dries.

Pretty freaking awesome. It looks reminiscent of a aics ax chassis. Only thing left is one of Shepard's mag adapters.
