long range 6.5-06

Postby farmerboy78 » Wed Dec 10, 2014 7:32 am

Well guys I am in the midst of building a new long range rig, I'm gonna build off a older remmy action that will be blueprinted. I have already purchased a bartlein tube in 6.5mm that's 27" long in a sendero contour. As far as a scope, I'm gonna use my 6-24x50 ffp vortex viper pst mrad that's on my savage .308 pc. I have two questions for you guys. First, should I replace the trigger or do a job on the factory one? Second, as far as the stock, I don't know if I want a stock or chassis. I'm looking at an eventual budget of $600-700 . So what do you guys think?

If you are wanting a really great trigger which is important to me, I'd get a Jewell. Cream of the crop IMO.

Sounds like a fun project!!

As for your two questions... I would DEFINITELY replace the trigger. Remington 700's are notorious for going bang when you flip the safety off. So scrubbing the original trigger/safety is the best bet. Timney, and Jewel both make drop in units w/ safeties. http://www.midwayusa.com/find?sortby=1& ... onid=18151

Now, $600-$700 is your budget for just a stock?? Or the whole rifle?? I've been really impressed with the XLR Chassis, and those run $750 for the evolution. http://www.xlrindustries.com/evolution.html They're fully adjustable and take the AI mags. A regular Manners or McMillan stock will run atleast $500 for a base model, and $700+ for any options you throw on. And the absolute cheapest stock I'd use on a rifle would be a B&C... this stock is $289. http://www.midwayusa.com/product/275209 ... uctFinding

Have fun building your rifle, and keep us posted!! 8-) 8-)

T I have actually been looking at the XLR chassis systems. I like both of them and have been leaning toward their light version. I have also looked at the bobby hart tactical with the bedding block.

A wood stock would definitely be better than a cheap fiberglass/polymer one. And that Bobby Hart looks pretty similar to the Big Gorilla stocks your Mosins are sporting. 8-)

Honestly though... Those XLR chassis are pretty sweet. My buddy has a .260 in the evolution, and a .243 in the element chassis. His .260 is awesome, but that .243 shooting 115 grain dtacs at 3400 fps is an absolute HAMMER!! Shooting a mile at a DA of 7000 is pretty easy, even with wind.

That's kinda why I have been looking at the bobby hart stock, I love the feel of those big gorilla stock. It would seem familiar. But the element is #1 on the list.

Quick update, I took my barrel to the smith this week and my action is in the mail to him. I have my dnz one piece mount, my vortex viper pst scope, and I just ordered my xlr element chassis with the tac lite buttstock and an aics magazine. All I need now is my replacement trigger for the remmy 700. The smith said he is a Lil backed up so I should get it back in early March. Can't wait until then to try her out.

Guys I've been reading online about aftermarket triggers. I've read that rifle basix are inconsistent, that jewel triggers are the best but are sensitive to dirt and dust. So I think timney is my brand due to ruggedness. But my question is about the calvin elite timney. Does anyone have any knowledge about these?

Well here is most of the setup I'm using in this build...

I love this chassis, the ergonomics are awesome!!! As said before it is a xlr element chassis with the aics magazine, nightforce 20moa rail, nightforce 30mm rings, nightforce angle indicator, vortex viper pst 6-24x50 ffp mrad, vortex throw lever, vortex battery holder...I also have a top half ring bubble level ordered. Just got off the phone with pacific tool and gauge in regards to a reamer with a .175 freebore... it's getting closer!!! :D
