Are the receivers the same on Mosin Nagant Models?

Postby M28-76-Lover » Fri Apr 26, 2013 8:32 am

Are the receivers the same on following Mosin Nagant Models?

By this I am asking ONLY about the Reciever, Bolt, Trigger and Mag Housing. ROUND receivers ONLY.

Russian M91/30
Russian M44
Chinese Type 53 (copy of M44)

Are there other models that use the same receiver?

I am working on a project that would use the Mosin Nagant action and need to know what models are the same.

Yes:
There are several variants for example the M38 Carbine, the M59 Carbine, The Polish version of the M44. The VZ54 Sniper Rifle(Which is one I would love to own) is also based on the Mosin Nagant. Their are more but they are based on Hex receivers so I didn't list them

Well obviously there are hex and round receivers and the round is used for most all models... That being said, depending on the production year will dictate differences in the machining... Some are stepped in the back near the tang, the Finn magazines are designed not to jam, and there is the whole high wall and low wall... Hope this helps.

Guys, Thanks...

Just so I am clear... If I had a Russian M44, a Russian M91/30 and a Chinese Type 53 (all being round receivers)... Do they all have the same barrel threading??

If I pulled all the barrels would the receivers all have the same external diamentions so that they would drop into the different inlets of the stocks? Again no barrel attached would they fit?

Yes def. every mosin even finish Mosins have the same barrel threads. Also finish receivers fit in exactly the same as the three that you have listed. The hex receiver is dif only above the wood so it will not interfere with a dif stock.

Every mosin however will have to have the barrel extractor cut custom done.

There are some variants that have an inside torque ring similar to the Mauser.
There was a post some time ago from a couple of guys that were re barreling the Mosin Nagant to 45-70.
They had two different sources of M44 actions and they showed pictures of one with the inner ring.

Not sure if this is the right area to ask this question, but is one arsenal better than another to use for making a custom rifle?

depends. Are you using original barrel? If so then yes. If your rebarelling then it doesn't matter since you can correct all the problems that a mason could have in the process.

Not really, it usually date related. The war time rifles were rushed into production so their level of finish is much lower than say a 20 or 30's rifle. Some people swear the Tula rifles are better I have not found evidence to that other than the reason above.

That being said, the Tula's tend to be worth more, I think it's the perception that the Tula's are better that makes them sell for a bit more. Plus the Tula star just looks cool on the barrel. Now when you go to a Finnish version of the Mosin Nagant that's a different story.
