My long range rifle (not a Mosin)

Postby ShootnMathews » Thu Sep 05, 2013 8:14 pm

Shot another group today to confirm my load. I have to say, I couldn't be happier. I know it's hard to tell in the picture but I can assure you you there's 3 shots in that picture. I shoot 3 shot groups instead of 5 normally. My guns are hunting guns first and I almost never fire more than 3 shots hunting. So that's how I group all my guns.

Details
_________

Gun: Savage 111 Long Range Hunter
Caliber: 6.5-284 Norma
Barrel: Stock Savage barrel 24" 26" at brake muzzle
Scope: Vortex Viper 6.5-20x44PA
Mount: Murphy Precision SS 20 MOA Cant
Rings: Leupold PRS Steel Rings

Load Data:

Brass: Lapua
Bullet: Berger VLD Hunting 140 grain
B.C.: .313 G7
Powder: Hodgdon 4831SC 52.7 grains
Length: 3.2375" --0.01" Jam into lands
Best group 3 shots @ 100 yards = 0.17"

I bought the gun for $729
Scope for $279
Mount for $119
Rings $60

So I've got a round $1200 + some change in the gun. I feel confident I can kill a deer to 750 + yards with it. Ill post up some long range targets as soon as I have time to shoot it. Season is right around the corner.

Thanks for looking

Here's a pic of today's group (3 shots @100 yards = 0.17") and one of the gun as she sits.

Currently the longest I would dar to shoot a deer is 300 but maybe next year I can stretch it even farther. That was the intent of Smyert III

Nice rig there. If you do get something at 750 do share. We wont call it boasting. :)

Thanks grim. I will certainly share. Th early season starts October 26 for does with a rifle. I am looking forward to christening her with a harvest. There are only a few places here I can shoot that far. I built this gun for when I travel and hunt. When you've got money and time wrapped up in a hunt, if I can see an animal I want, I want to be able to kill it. Know what I mean?

Jared.

Looking forward to seeing your rifle stretch out there

Cool farmer. Sounds like a sweet rig. Congrats on the deer at 420. That's a good shot. Did the Berger VLD do a number on her?? This will be my first time using them as a hunting bullet. I hear lots of good things about them. What kind of velocity are you getting? I get around 2400 in my Mosin with 42.5 Varget and a 174 SMK.

I haven't shot it through a chrony, but every ballistic software I try with my info on load and trajectory shows 2800 fps, and yes the Berger is a great hunting bullet.... I use a 75 gr vld in a savage 12 in 22 middlestead and the 175 in my .308.... The doe dropped right in her tracks just like you see on tv....

The accuracy of this gun is really starting to amaze me. It took me a long time to find the magic seating depth on these Berger VLD hunting bullets but once I did this gun is absolutely driving nails. I shot it some yesterday to zero it at 200 yards and then shot a 1/4" group at 200 yards. It's incredible. And to think, it's only a $719 gun
