Project Desh 1500yd Mosin

Postby Grimstod » Sat Jan 04, 2014 12:40 pm

So I am already thinking about how I should go about my next build even though I am going to set a goal of completion by 2016. There will be two requirements in this project. First it must shoot supersonic to 1500yards. Second it must be rugged enough to take into combat. I am calling this build Desh which means "My countries soil" This build will be somewhat modular in that I can take it apart and combine various components to make it good for F-class or Palma or combat.

Fetures it must have:
Laminated wood stock but probably camo painted
Adjustable cheek weld
Adjustable but plate that is interchangeable with the Anschutz type for Palma.
32" barrel
barrel tuner and bloop tube
Open sites for backup and Palma competitions
308 boar for shotting those heavy bullets like Berger 200gr VLD
chambered in 7.62x54r
relocated bolt
the action MUST be blueprinted
integrated picitily rail
Must have a detachable cary handle and barrel mirage shade similar to SV98 (see one here http://giaoduc.net.vn/Uploaded/quyhoi/2 ... ong_21.jpg )
The finest scope (not going to say what kind yet since there may be something better 2 years from now)
The scope must be a first focal plan and mill rect with mill turrets, that I do know.
Timny trigger or perhaps an Anschutz if I can modify one to fit.
Detachable bipod and a rear monopod that is also detachable for bench shooting.
I am also thinking of a barrel block or hybrid system like this ( http://www.puolustusvoimat.fi/wcm/a6e19 ... cf0085d067 )

I was just running some calculations and if I can get 2500ftps with a 32in barrel (which should be easy since my 26' mosin shoots 200gr bullets at 2400 already) My maximum range will be like 1550 yards easy, and drop will be about 21mill with remaining energy of 550 Ibs.

1000 yards will be only 10mills and a remaining energy of 960 Ibs. That should be enough to take even a Elk. It won't drop it but he won't go far ether

Good idea! Way to go!
I intend to use super long barrel in bullpup... overall length of a rifle will allow me it without making it too long...

Very interesting. I love the long barrel idea.

Making it modular is going to be super tuff. This will def be a challenge.

So have been doing research and looking at a lot of other builds out there AND I need to find some sort of a drag bag that this thing will fit in. Now the case that you see in the first post will be nice for competitions but I must be able to take this thing into the woods. Thing is no one make drag bags longer then 46in

Question for all of you. Do you know of any drag bags that will fit a longer gun. I estimate this things will be 55in long. And depending on the muzzle break/tuner this thing gets it will even be longer.

Or I need to figure out how to make the stock fold. Would be cool but adds complications. Its one more thing that could come loose and also one more thing I will have to do. Note I don't like L96 stocks so I won't be just adopting one of these.

The SV has a lot of the things I want but I will def not be imitating it outright. It lacks the longer barrel and the range of only 1200m I am looking for 1500+ and that is a big difference. Still I wish I could get my hands on this action here in the USA. the interchangeable mags would be a big plus though this isn't the end of the world for me.

Ben have you been able to run the pressure numbers on a 32 inch barrel? Also what type of velocity are you looking to achieve? The longest barrel data I can find is 28.75 inches. So if your adding another 3.25 inches I think your going to need a slow powder to give you a gradual pressure increase verses a rapid one.

I'm also wondering what travel time for the bullet will be before it leaves the barrel, This is a very interesting concept. I wish I had more solid information to help you with.

I think I would also consider a big barrel block to stabilize the receiver.
There is some great info in this article from Lilja Barrels

Thanks Mark. I think I have never seen that page before. I am reading it now.
As for powder I will def have to use a slower powder. And for pressure I will probably have to look at data from M91s since they had 31in barrels and that's reasonably close.
Anyone have data for thee m91?
