600yd M28/76 diopter report

Postby DevilDog » Tue Apr 30, 2013 9:13 pm

All I can say is, WOW! What a blast. Shooting iron sights at 600yds
was daunting. The adjustments on the diopter are tough, so I was not sure I would even be on paper.

I set up at 100yds so that I was striking my normal 18MOA high for 600yds. Now Peter, our 600yd range officer, is not surprised what I bring out anymore, and was less worried than I about not being on paper to start.

I was shooting at the 36" black circle, with a 1MOA X ring and 2 MOA 10 ring, which seems generous until you see it in the diopter at 600yds...pretty small. Not as focused on my eyes, and I shot the late group with light fading it became harder to get a consistent sight picture.

Then BOOM, first shot out in the 10 ring and by the 5th shot I had nailed an X:

Now I wish I could say they all went like that, but the rear dipoter screw came loose and I started making adjustments, and things went a bit downhill.

A few 7's and 8's, but I scored 12 shots in the 10ring, 5 being x's.

It was a hoot hitting anything without a scope at that range, and a testament to the Finnish M28/76.

This was shot with Berger 190gr VLD Target .308's on 45gr Vit N140

I'd call that a 'pinwheel' X... Good shooting!!

Yes, the aiming black is 36" but it's pretty small at range. The 1,000 yard NRA target has a 44" aiming black!! :o It's very challenging to hold a consistent sight picture with iron sights... especially with a post front sight.

I don't know if you would ever consider this -- but it would go on a Mosin real well. Standard 3/8" dovetail and its locked in with 2 screws. Makes shooting diopter sights more tennel type. Ever see one of the old lever action rifles with a long brass tube on top? From the receiver to the muzzle -- now thats a tunnel!

That looks like it would work on the Mosin Jerry!

All of my long range shooting on NRA targets has been with a service rifle though... you CAN'T use front and rear apertures, or diopter sighs.

Image

Service rifle's have front sight posts... and you can't use any type of external support. I.E. no bipods, front rests, etc. You shoot prone, with sling support.

I could hold my own though, I've shot a 198, several 197's and 196's on the 1,000 yd target (20 shot strings). My NRA Long-Range classification is a Master... not too bad for a 5.56. 8-)

That is good shooting for an aperture! My eyes won't support regular or aperture anymore.

F-Class is a bit tougher scoring that Service Rifle though, you only need 94% for Master and we are 96.5%. I guess that makes up for us using a bipod and rear bag

(For those that are not familiar with the scoring, that 2.5% difference equates to 5 shots falling out of the 10 ring into the 9 ring, or 25% of your shots.)

However, I am not sure there is a target spec for F-Class with open sights. To read the NRA rulebook, the targets listed are 1 MOA X and 2 MOA Ten ting, same as Service Rifle.

With a scope, however, we shoot at slightly less than 1/2MOA X and 1 MOA 10 rings.

Given last nights results, I maybe could outscore my scope tally with a diopter!
