My new toy

Postby USSR » Fri May 18, 2012 10:05 am

Well I had mentioned a while back I was trying to get a new rifle and get rid of another, I had thought about getting another Mosin but figured I should focus on getting mine finished before I got another (this is just how my mind works). I had posted an ad on gunlistings.org for surplus trade or cash and within days I had offers of all sorts of rifles (Mausers, SKS, Finn Mosins, an M44) the one that caught my attention was a Swiss K31. So after the trade I ended up with a 1945 K31 with the Beechwood stock all numbers matching except the bolt, sure that makes it less special but what DID make it special was the troop tag under the buttplate! Is not all stained either, looks absolutely perfect. Well heres the pics, enjoy!

Verrry Nice. I love those Swiss cross emblems on there, I have always admired them. Looks very clean, nice acquisition.

Straight pull..too fun. Now you need to go find ammo

ammo isn't very hard to find when you're an internet wizard like myself. Its not Spam can cheap but you can pick up a good amount for Spam can money. Its so light compared to my Mosin! Very pleased with my choice, you have no idea how fantastic the trigger is on these things it has a VERY distinct 2 stage trigger. I'm eager to see what it can do with iron sites.

Shortly after I got the K31 I decided it needed cleaning, I started by stripping the rifle down and pulling all metal off of the stock. I then sprayed it down a total of 4-5 times with Simple Green letting is set in a bit before wiping it down.

Here was before I started

Hard to tell it improved but here is the finished product

Took the K31 out yesterday shooting GP11 match grade surplus ammunition. It is fairly accurate at 50 yds and decent at 100 yds but I think I will be scoping this to explore it's capabilities.

For those whom wonder what the troop tag is all about this is what hides under some K31 buttplates, it corresponds with the serial numbers of the rifle and the owners name, home city, and his job in the military. Mine was Hans Leuthold whom was born in 1927 and served in the 3rd mounted transport and was from Strata I'm assuming is a nearby city of Turren.

That troop tag really tells a story, freakin awesome. Gave me chills just thinking about it.

I was so excited when I found it hiding out under the buttplate. It'd be neat to write him a letter but he'd be in his upper 80's by now.

Awesome find. A piece of active duty history like that is something most people don't get the joy to find.

I looked at one of these years ago but as a left handed shooter that big handle was just not feasible for me to deal with. Cool find on the Tag though, He would have to be about up there in years if he is still alive. BUT you may be able to find a descendant which would be awesome.

Great looking K31, Brett.

As stated earlier, the Swiss markings are distinctly crisp. Nice! And way to go on the stock!

I'm putting a Yugoslavian SKS M59/66A1 in jail tomorrow morning. My first goal in 10 days is too clean the cosmoline off and refinish it to professional grade.

I'll post it here for all of you to share in my joy. I hope that baby shoots well.

I ended up trading this guy off for my T53. I liked it but ammo was hard to find. Now I have two rifles with a common size caliber.
