Any Swiss K-31 owners in the house?

Postby Marauder 1 » Wed Jul 09, 2014 1:36 pm

Looks like I'm going to be able to finally find one of these to add to my collection. Anyone else have one?
Thanks
Mark

Yep. Picked one up about two months ago. Once you take it out shooting you'll fall in love. There's nothing quite like it.

Yeah mark, I have one and they're quite accurate, but are slightly stiff in recoil...rock solid does mounts, I have a clamp on side mount and use a set of mauser lsr ring setup that will put the scope over the bore.

Bluegrass gun stocks is building a custom stock for them now too. It really helps tame the recoil I hear. I might have to try one. What do you guys usually pay for ammo and is it re-loadable?

It is reloadable. Apparently the standard swiss surplus rounds for it are about as good as it gets and many don't bother with reloading. But you technically can. The surplus stuff is non corrosive as well which is a huge plus. I've shot it several times with just what I could find at Cabelas and didn't mind the recoil at all.

Mark,
I have a couple K31s, too. Nice rifles. The G91 milsurp ammo is non corrosive berdan primed. Great ammo, nice brass and reasonably inexpensive but NOT reloadable with boxer primers. I use PRVI brass, rather ammo, then reload the brass. The PRVI ammo runs around $15-18 per 20. Grafs has two types of custom ammo, much more expensive, loaded by Hornady. They use PRVI brass as well.

Also, K31s are comparatively heavy compared to M91/30s. I'm not a big guy and I can shoot a K31 all day long, steel butt plate and all.

As for reloading, for all the hype G91 ammo is not all that. It is better than Russian milsurp 7.62x54r but handloads can do better. It is tricky to load for though. The K31 has a shorter throat than its Schmidt Rubin predecessors. So published load data, which is more often than not developed for older SR models, is not the most reluable. You have to be willing to do some load development. I like the development process myself.

Also, published data tends to be overly conservative and underpowered, since it has tended to be developed for older Swiss models. In a K31, it is possible to get ballistics similar to 7.62x54r. The Sierra Manual has the best load data for reference I've found, for starting load dev.

I'm to have to check out this Bluegrass stock you allude to... :-)
