Bolt won't close

Got a sick Mosin Nagant? Maybe we can help. Post your repair questions here.

Bolt won't close

Postby TheJoe » Sat Oct 27, 2012 7:46 pm

Got a 34 Tula and bolt barely closes with a lot of force on a go gauge, but not a spent round. Can't try a live round until tomorrow. I suspect I will have the same problem and if I do fire a round she might be really tough to open.

Bolt closes on empty chamber. Everything looks clean.

Anything to look for?
Is there any possibility this can be remedied without turning down the bolt head?

First gun I've run into headspace issues on.

OK there are several areas to look, first place is the extractor. See if it's not allowing the bolt to easily drop over the rim

Second look for a burr in the chamber. I had one on my 44 Tula ex sniper

make sure the extractor groove in the barrel is not filled with junk.

There is a few places to start

Using Okie Gauges, so I don't think it could be a chamber or extractor issue since neither of those parts are effected by the gauge. I didn't think about trying different bolts last night. I'll try a few different bolts and bolt heads and maybe that will help determine if it's a receiver problem or bolt issue.

I've been trying to build a bolt for one of my project rifles, I recently purchased a beautiful Tula bolt head and knob set. I dropped it on to the bolt assembly and it won't even close. I had another head that is a beat up one with no extractor and that unit does close. I measured both with a set of calipers and there is a difference in length between the 2. So the length of the head is critical. Now if this is a rifle you just purchased you can call the importer and see if they will fix it for you.

Thanks Mark, I tried another bolt today and it closed perfectly on a go gauge but was still very tight on a spent round. I'll put a caliper to the heads sometime this week and see if I can find the problem. The bolt has a really crappy looking carrier too, I may try to do some part swapping and see if one of the bolt componets is the culprit.

I was about to post a new topic when I found this old one
out of 4 Mosin's, one was very difficult to close the bolt with a round in the chamber - cycled very easy empty. Like the old joke of using a 2x4 to close the bolt.
tried all the tricks on all the web sites.
switched bolts from another one of my Mosins from the same armory
even replaced the extractor claw with a new one - no joy.
then I took a curved dental pick and scraped the extractor grove in the barrel where I could not see - found the recess filled with burnt - something. Scraped the recess several times and this finally solved my issue.
I can now cycle the bolt without dropping the stock off my shoulder
guess I should have taken it into a dental hygienist and not a gunsmith
