Barrel + Ammo

Postby djfred » Mon Jan 13, 2014 4:21 pm

Okay i have a question, hopefully its in the right area.

I just recently got my Mosin in December and have not shot it yet.
Trying to get a couple things for it and just recently got the ammo in too.

Today when i was cleaning the barrel i tried to put the tip of the ammo into the barrel to see if it would fit and it does not, it only goes in a little and im wondering if this is normal. When the ammo gets shot out the does tip of the ammo get crimped when it exits. Here is an example of what it looks like when i put the ammo in. Thats all it goes in.

It is normal don't worry. It should not fit this way because of rifling... A bore has bigger diameter actually. You can slug you barrel to know actual diameter of the bore.

I would not be so worry about it. What you should do is to check head space... That's for sure.

If your bullet slid all they way into the end of the barrel then you would have something to worry about. Because it doesn't it means the rifling is good all the way to the end.

Thanks guys,
I believe my head space is ok.
The serial numbers all match with bolt and barrel. Nothing has been changed. Is there a way i can check other than getting a Okie gauge.

First off it the bullet did go in all the way it would mean the barrel was counter bored. That's a process the armory used to restore a rifle to usable condition because of improper cleaning in the field by it's former owner.

Looking at your muzzle it looks like that rifle could do with a re-crowning. But it could just be the angle in the photo. If it does need to be re crowned it's no big deal but getting it done will vastly improve the accuracy.
