smothing out the M39 action

as the forum members know, I just acquired my first Finn M39
not an armory rebuild, but a battlefield recovery rifle
had the stiffest action of any of my Mosins
literally had to pound the bolt handle up to cock it
did everything I've always done on my Mosins - scrubbing the chamber and cleaning the bolt
came up with a different approach today
took out the bolt head and connecting bar
polished the lug on the connecting bar with 800 grit paper
then I over-tightened the firing pin spring, coated the cocking piece ramps with JB lapping compound
put on work gloves and hand cocked the bolt body and cocking piece for over an hour
cleaned with mineral spirits and lubed with lubriplate
readjusted the firing pin spring -
as smooth as my '36 Tula sniper now!!

Always more than one way to skin the cat. Have you had a chance to shoot it yet?

the vision in my right eye has deteriorated to the point I can't shoot iron sights - will have to have my son shoot it next time he's free. Getting old sucks
that's why I've scoped several of my Mosins and my Mauser
I don't want to scope this M39, but I just can't see the sites to even shoot 100 yrds

I just found Mojo makes a set of aperture sights for the M39 - will get a set on order today
I have a set on one of my 91/30s and they do help with these old eyes.
I just can't focus on the original sights on this M39

by the way, one reason I like my Mosin M38 is that I can focus on the shorter sight radius on this carbine - just have to adapt to the concussion
