Iridium's New Tool Thread Mini Lathe

Postby iridium-192 » Mon Dec 16, 2013 3:24 pm

Here is a quick update...
It moves slow but sure!
As I already mention, I want to make a lathe with new spindle (shaft) so inner diameter would be over 1 1/4". In order to make it possible I have to make new spindle with different set of ball bearings (I already have them). Outer diameter of bearings remains the same 62mm but inner is 40mm now verses 30mm old ones...
SO old inner diameter of the spindle was just 0.8" & now it is 1.3".
As far as a strength of ball bearings, old set is low quality & cheap, Now I have way higher quality stuff (way more expensive as well), time will show how they perform. If this set will fail, I'll find something else.

Now I need install gears somehow...; New 5" chuck to open it to 1.3" inner diameter & assemble everything together.

Lots & lots of work...

Some pictures above show how a head of old spindle installed on new shaft. I tried to find English equivalent to Russian (Горячая посадка) but literal translation to English would sound incorrect... So I'll describe it this way - one part which goes IN to another is cooled (shaft in this case); another part which is (Spindle head) is heated. Outer diameter of the shaft is about 0.05mm bigger then inner diameter of spindle head when the temperatures of both parts are the same... Once the shaft is inserted in spindle head while both retain temperature difference (about 500+ C) in less then 1 second temperature difference rapidly starts to decrease. Absolutely no place for mistake or do over, ones its there - ITS THERE!... Now it is one part. Practically inseparable... 8-)

Oh, if anybody knows how this procedure called in English, please let me know...

Thank you!

Liquid nitrogen is interesting to work with. We used it to shrink bearings and brass inserts. Its not cheap but the best way to make interference type construction work.
