Lapua D166 bullets

Postby Deathsythe311 » Thu Mar 02, 2017 6:56 pm

Hey saw some stuff about this on YouTube. Anybody have any experience with them. Midway had some yesterday but I just looked and they are sold out. Almost bought them but wanted more feedback.

The Lapua D-166 is a .310 dia., 123gr bullet that Lapua specifies for the 7.62x39 . The SKS or AK-47 . Could be used in a somewhat shot-out .308 barrel . They do make a .311 version , that is product #4PL/HL7045 .If you're after the .311 , use the right product number , or you'll end up with the .308 bullet . You might have to order the .311 version . Bruno's has a decent selection of Lapua in stock , but you'd have to call them if you're looking for the .311 .

If you are looking for a .308 bullet , the D-46 ( #4317590 ) is a good choice for mid-range shooting . But it has to be "short-loaded", due to design of the reduced smaller diameter boat-tail . Happen to know that Bruno's has some of them in stock at about $41.00 per hundred . For longer range ; the .308 175gr. Scenar (#GB432) is the better choice . Recommended to me by the Lapua Rep at the Berger last month . Lapua doesn't have a lot of .311's on their roster , unfortunately .

I was looking to use it in my m39. I wanted to load some for it.

I had them & agree with Grindl, they're light & .310 in diameter, making them more suitable for 7.62x39 more then for 7.62x54r. There are some left overs, I believe, in my stash, but I don't see them useful.
Don't regret, there are far better choices for reloading, like this one...
303 Caliber .311 Diameter 174 Grain HP Boat Tail Matchking

This info is wrong! The d-166 is a .310 200gr bullets designed for the m39 not a 123gr for an AK or sks

You data is correct ; as is what I posted . There are two D-166 bullets , sold with two different product numbers . That is why I commented on being sure of the correct product numbers .

4PL/HL 7005 D166 200gr .310
4PL/HL 7045 FMJ 123gr .311
Both bullets are "classified" by Lapua as a D166.
Source is newest current Lapua catalog , pages 42-43 .

I apologies if my post wasn't clear and concise enough to be understood . Didn't want someone to purchase the 123gr. by mistake .

Yeah these are 200 grains bullets. IV8888 has a video about them and I wanted to see if any of you guys have tried them. I have smk hpbt 174 in .311 but wanted to load for my m39 sporter. I guess I'll have to pick some up and give them a try and do a review.

I used to have a 28/76 that was throated for the d166, had it stamped on the barrel... these shot very well, and I have some I may part with.
