I was picking some reloading supplies from a local shop near where i live called 10 Ring. While browsing the bullet selection i happened across these Speer 180gr round nose soft points. I have seen them before but never really considered them. Lately its been a pain to get the 174gr SMKs it seems like i always have to back order them so i decided to take a chance and bought a couple boxes of the speers.
Granted these are a completely different animal than the match style bullets i normally load in 54R so i wasn't really expecting phenomenal accuracy but i figured it would be good to develop a hunting load for hogs and white tail to be used this year.
I loaded 3 rounds for 6 different charge weights ranging from 40gr to 42.5gr in 1/2 grain increments. Using H4895, Winchester brass and primers.
Shown here with my usual load using 174gr Sierras
Ready for the range
I shot groups at 100 yards using my M44 sporter. Off a bench and sandbags. Conditions were nice considering all the rain we've had here in houston lately.
Here is the best group shot that day. It was with 42gr of H4895. So far im pleased with the bullets performance. Next time i get a chance to get out to the range ill chronograph my shots and maybe take them out a little further.
