What am I doing wrong?

Postby Grimstod » Sun Dec 29, 2013 11:18 am

Here are the conditions.
Using 311 bullets
Full resize of brass with 310 expander ball
Over primed brass with 42gr of IMR4350

Every bullet is turning out this way and its frustrating me. The neck is ruined and the bullets stays lodged in the seating die. These are RCBS dies. PPU bras once fired. I have to take the dies apart to get the bullet out when it gets stuck in the seating die.

Wow... Try larger expander... I have exactly the same RCBS set of dies but .311 expander. If it doesn't work just buy new set of dies I guess...

I can actually push the bullets into the brass with my finger. The top photo has a bullet in it that I pushed in by hand. its crooked to but that no surprise. So I don't think its an expander ball issue. Most expander balls are slightly smaller then the bullet anyway so there is some tension on the bullet. The ball measures 310 but cam in a 311 package.

I have had this problem before with another caliber...it was .224...The case resized fine, but when I loaded the bullet the case did this exact thing with bergers...I miced out the expander ball and it was actually too small causing the bullet to have too much neck tension and collapsing the case in the neck/shoulder area...I would definitely mic the expander ball and potentially switch to a different size...that's what I had to do, my expander was worn and I didn't realize it...

Its a brand new expander ball. Mices at 310 and is labeled 311. I just had a susses full one. I set the bullet deeper this time. The lack of precision I get from this dies bothers me. I wish my forster dies would get here.

Ok got it figured out. basically you can't fallow the instruction  If you do there is a rim inside the RCBS seating die that will crush the neck. You have to turn the entire die out about three turns from bottom. The seating stem problem has fixed itself now that the bullets are getting into the brass farther cause I set them a little deeper.

Good to hear. I use rcbs dies and love them... I have both .308 and .311 expanders with both full length and neck sizers...and a Lee crimp die

I assume that is an RCBS seating die??

I don't think your expander ball is at fault... it would have to be WAY undersize (like 20-30 thousandths) for a boattail bullet to do that.

It looks like a round that has been overcrimped... back out the seating die, and see what it does. RCBS seating dies have a heavy roll crimp that in my experience is somewhat short.

I have a Lee factory crimp die, and I seat and crimp in different steps.

I don't crimp. This die doesn't have that feature anyway. It turned out that I had the die screwed in to far. Backing it out three turns fixed it.

It looks like I'm too late to the party but that was my suggestion. Most factory seaters are designed to roll the brass mouth into a crimp groove or canteleur. I know that has to be spelled wrong, but anyways, on a bullet without a groove it will shove the neck back. Usually unscrewing it one full turn will disengage it. Feel free to call me or text me anytime you have any questions.
