Load Recipe for M-N .308 Barrels

Postby Grindl » Thu Sep 14, 2017 8:43 pm

In my search for a Mid-range ( 600 yd. ) load , I finally arrived at a real "Tack-driver" load for those with a good .308 barrel .
Brass : S&B - OAL 2.110
Bullet : 155gr. Palma Match - Sierra #2156
Powder : 51.5gr A-4350 ...52gr of A-4350 will achieve 2760fps. Chrono'ed by a Magneto speed Chrono . Avg. of ten rounds.
OAL : 3.365 Base to Ogive. Or if you use a Hornady OAL gauge , set it .020 off the throat . Round may have to be single-loaded as it may be to long for magazine . But it is accurate ; if you have a good barrel .

DO NOT JAM THIS LOAD ! Meaning : Do NOT stuff the bullet into the lands .
If not me.....Who ?
If not now ....When ?

For those of us who live where the Summer temps go over 100/105F , I've worked up a very good load .
Load work-up was done with temps at 85F to 94F and I saw no pressure indications of any kind . Even by shooting 30 rounds in 22 minutes . The normal time allowance for a 20 round "F"-class string . Though I have been using S&B Brass for competition , I have been forced to use PPU for this load , due to case-fill , but saw no negatives in using the PPU brass , and accuracy is excellent at 600 yards .

Case : PPU - trimmed / neck de-burred
Case OAL : 2.110"
Primer : S&B LRP
Powder : Accurate - A4350...53.4gr
Bullet : Berger 185gr Juggernaut
BTO : 3.380" set with Hornady OAL gauge , or .020 off your throat .

Berger bullets ; at least the "Jug" , like about .015-.020 jump for best accuracy , and I do not recommend "jamming" , this load . You will have about 95-98% case-fill , so tapping the case to settle the powder before seating the bullet is suggested .

I did get to shoot this load on our first 100 degree day last week , and it performed flawlessly . Ten rounds at 600 yards : One 9 , and nine 10's - 5 X's . Second string of ten rounds : 3-9's ,
7-10's - 4-x's . That converts to a 196-9x , and on this range with this crowd , it might get a 3rd or 4th place , if I could repeat it twice more . This could become my year-round , go-to load .
