Primers and Case Length

Postby Shepard » Fri Jun 14, 2013 5:25 am

#1 -- I've reloaded ammunition for years. I know the difference between standard and magnum primers. What makes bench rest primers different from standard primers? When I talked with my friend at Bens Gun Shop he told me consistency. The price for BR primers was double that of large rifle primers.

#2 -- Case trim length. In reading my load book from Loadbooks USA there are 4 different case trim lengths listed and a 5th listing on the Lee load sheet that came with the dies. There's a difference of .024 trim length from the shortest to the longest. Has anyone ever measured the chamber depth to the end of the case neck to determine the case trim length for your gun -- or do you use the numbers out of the books.

#3 -- If a person decided to grow his cases length by fire forming -- how far would you keep the end of the brass from the measured end of the chamber?
I walk in the foot steps of Carlos Hathcock -- to my end.

There are tons of primers out there. Blows my mind. I have so much to learn before I dive into this reloading.

I just use the lee case trimmer. I believe it trims at 54mm. Really I don't think it matter as long as they are all the same and consistant. And of course they can't be bottoming out when firing stretch occurs
