custom 28/76 range report

Postby farmerboy78 » Wed Aug 14, 2013 3:07 pm

hey guys, I recently built myself a steel target to pound with my rifles... got a chance to take it out today with my k31 and my custom 28/76...the k31 was decent and what I would call average for the swiss with gp11 ammo, but my .308 bore 28/76 with handloads is just darn surgical... my load is norma 7.62x54r brass, 175 gr SMK, 54 gr IMR 4350, WLR primer, with a medium crimp, redfield battlezone tac-moa 3-9x40... i shot the k31 first and circled the 200 yd group and then my 28/76, starting at 400,450, and then 500 yds... my 400 yard group was 3 shots about 11/2" low... my 450 was 3 shots low and right due to the wind, and the 500 was 4 shots left factoring for the wind, seems the wind slacked on me on one shot... need to learn how to judge wind better... i am stoked about my results... WOW!!!

Farmer,
There's just something deep down satisfying about when that trigger breaks, and the bullet screams out there and pounds that gong. Am I right?!? It's quite addictive. I love shooting at around 750. Hopefully soon ill have the time to stretch her legs to 1000 yards.

Good shooting

Yes it is, love the sound of the impact, that's the furthest I've shot any of my mosins so far... That's stretching for a 3-9x40 will see how much I can get in future.

Outstanding shooting farmerboy78!!

I regularly shoot my 32 Tula sporter out to 800 yds, she has an SWFA 10X SS on her... though the farthest I've shot her was 1360 yds with 2nd and 3rd round hits. That target was 20"x30". I typically stick with targets that are 2-3 MOA atleast... and 10X is ok for that.

The higher powers definitely help with smaller targets and longer distances. I'm seriously considering bumping up to the SS 3-15X or the Vortex Viper 4-16X on my M28/76. I'm planning on shooting 190 grain SMK's, and if I can get 2600 fps, I'd be approaching .300 win mag performance.

Again, good shooting... your definitely making me want mine up and running!!

With the way this thing shoots 175 SMK I don't know if I'd go to another load, but I'd try them... I'm not sure with my velocity, I worked my load til I squeezed the most accuracy out of it... Although the 190 probably would have less wind drift... I was getting about 6" of drift at 450-500 yds with a 10-11 mph left to right wind... My gong is 18" tall x 14" wide... My scope is the only thing I'd change, but that Redfield is more than worth what I paid for it... Wish they would make another battlezone with about a 16x, I like the reticle a lot

Hey guys, I have since put a 16x swfa ss on this rifle...the last time I had her at the range, my scope BROKE! I had been planning to take her long range... I sent the scope back to swfa and received a brand new 16x yesterday. I mounted up the scope today and took her back to the range today! I got her all zeroed and took her right to the long distance range... I took her out to 750yds using 173 gr m118 pulled bullets... I used the data from my custom sniper and it was on on but about 10" high ( longer barrel)... I'm glad to get her running again... I'm about to begin a hunting load development using the 178 gr amax for my 2 m28/76 rifles... it showed promise when I fired 10 rounds today at the zero distance and at 400yds...

By the way, if anyone needs a range in arkansas, I'm shooting at V.E.T.S. shooting center near bald knob!

If you have any info on that range send it to me I'll add it to our links section in the shooting ranges.
Thanks
Mark
